St. John's College
St. John's College is a co-educational, four-year, liberal arts
college with no religious affiliation. It was founded in 1696
and has two campuses, one in Annapolis, Maryland and another in
Santa Fe, New Mexico. Students may attend both campuses in the
course of their studies. The College awards both Bachelor of
Arts and Master of Arts degrees.
The program of study is all-required and non-departmental.
Through the reading of original texts, students reflect on the
great questions of Western tradition from ancient Greece to
modern times. The curriculum includes study in the classics of
literature, philosophy, theology, psychology, political
science, economics, history, mathematics, laboratory sciences,
music and the visual arts.
St. John's College is located on a
36-acre campus in Annapolis, Maryland.
It is a registered National Historic
Landmark and lies in the heart of the
Historic District, across the street from
the Naval Academy. Situated at the
confluence of the Chesapeake Bay and the
Severn River, Annapolis is one of the
best preserved colonial towns in America,
with a flourishing fish, crab and oyster
industry and major recreational and sailing activities. The
capital of Maryland, Annapolis was first settled in the 17th
century. It was here that George Washington resigned his
command of the Continental Army, and where, three weeks later,
the Treaty of Paris was signed, ending the Revolutionary War.
Approximately 60 percent of St. John's students receive
need-based financial aid. Two of the most prestigious aid
programs offered are the Hodson Scholars awards and
the Hodson Foundation Scholarships, which are awarded for four
years to those students attending the Annapolis, Maryland
campus who demonstrate academic promise and finanicial need. Through these two
programs, St. John's College
and The Hodson Trust are helping to ensure that economic circumstances
will not stand in the way of a student's entry into St. John's
College and completion of its program of studies.
