Washington College was founded under the patronage of George Washington as the first college chartered in the new nation. Today, the College is ranked among the top liberal arts colleges in the country. Set in historic Chestertown on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, the college provides a supportive and personalized education with generous opportunities for undergraduate research, internships, creative projects and study abroad. Students appreciate its setting on the Chester River amid the ecological bounty of the Chesapeake Bay region as a natural extension of the classroom and a personal learning laboratory for their intellectual and social growth.

With 1,350 students and 100+ professors, each student benefits from the advantages of small classes, access to excellent and attentive faculty, and opportunities to shine in academics, campus leadership, creative endeavors and athletic competition.

Students may choose among 44 majors, minors and pre-professional concentrations. The College offers study abroad at 42 universities and programs in 23 countries. Among the top majors are biology, business management, economics, environmental studies, English, international studies, and psychology.

Washington College offers financial assistance to 87% of its student body. Two of the most prestigious scholarships offered by Washington College are the Hodson Trust Scholarship and the Hodson Scholarship Foundation Award.

Hodson Trust Scholarships are awarded to full-time students who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, character and school/community citizienship. Annual awards range in amount from $12,500 to $17,500.

Hodson Scholarship Foundation awards are given to entering students from ethnic backgrounds that are traditionally underrepresented in higher education. Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of academic and personal achievement. Annual awards range in amount from $5,000 to $17,500.

Hodson Trust and Hodson Scholarship Foundation scholarships are awarded by the Washington College Scholarship Committee to accepted applicants. In all cases, it is advantageous to complete the requirements for admission in advance of the February 15 deadline.
